The New Theatre is a familiar venue for us, and it was good to be back there after a 3-year gap for Covid. All the staff we spoke with were very helpful. The show itself started well – the warm-up comedian, Pierre Novellie, had good material and delivered it with excellent timing – lots of chuckles. Phil Wang, however, was disappointing, spinning out a very limited number of jokes to just under an hour. I thought we might get some interesting British / SE Asian cross-cultural material, but apart from the brief ‘Hi ya’ gag, there was just a long well-thumbed story from the schoolboy joke book about measuring penis lengths. The nipple observations were funnier, but again over long, as he has a habit of repeating himself. It was a shame, as we had enjoyed seeing his tv panel appearances.

Sound like Brighton was a rehearsal for St Albans on 7th Oct. Similar jokes, some of which we'd seen at the St Albans Comedy garden a few months ago. Phil is funny but lasted 59 minutes.
